About The Project

Having spent 4 months in lockdown, we had time to look at our living space and formulate a plan.

It all started with wanting more storage in the kitchen and a bigger bench. Our friends and family seemed to congregate in the kitchen, so it was a no-brainer – we needed to make it bigger!

Our morning routine was a nightmare, especially with two young adults living at home. So the floor plan had to be re-jigged. It was decided that plumbing had to be moved and the fridge relocated, which meant a wall had to be moved to accommodate the large fridge.

We removed the window and added the skylights for more natural light.

The Living Space

The Building Process

Building work started almost as soon as the decision was made. Progress was impressive at first, but then came another lockdown. The day our beautiful, functional kitchen was supposed to be installed, Auckland went into a 5-week lockdown.

We had just started construction, so our water, gas, and electricity were turned off. Not only that, all the cabinets were already delivered, so the interesting 5-week period of living without a kitchen began.

I am a firm believer in not sweating the small stuff and not worrying about things I have no control over. So, we turned the laundry into a makeshift kitchen.

At least the timber floors had not arrived from Germany!

Once we were allowed to have tradies in Level 3, the kitchen was completed in record time. Thanks to Moda Kitchens, who arrived the day after the lockdown was lifted.

The floors arrived, and tradies worked tirelessly to complete the project, thank you to Haro Flooring for making it happen!
